Geosciences at The University of Akron

In the Geosciences Program at The University of Akron, our professors provide many learning opportunities unique to UA students with modern instrumentation for geologic and environmental research.

Our research covers hydrogeology, paleoclimate reconstruction, climate change, sedimentology, geochemistry, geobiology, and geochemistry.

Degrees we offer

Undergraduate: We offer bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees, and students can participate in Honors College programs in coordination with the geology program.

Graduate students: We offer degrees in Geology, Earth Science, and Environmental Science. Each area offers a wide range of research opportunities.

Field Camp offered by The University of Akron

Geology Field Camp

The University of Akron's Geology Field Camp is typically offered each summer in South Dakota & Wyoming. The five-week camp is broken into two 3-credit parts. Field Camp II is not offered every year, therefore, if you are interested, please contact Field Camp faculty.

Geosciences student organization wins national award

The Akron chapter of the Association for Women Geoscientists wins national award.

Top teaching award recognizes geosciences professor

Dr. Ira D. Sasowsky, professor of geosciences, received the Outstanding Teacher Award in recognition of his dedication to petroleum geology through his research in karst geology, teaching, advising, mentorship, and his service to AAPG at the 2024 annual meeting of the Eastern Section American Association of Petroleum Geologists (ESAAPG).

Geologist Awarded Mather Medal

On Friday, September 13, 2024, the Ohio Geological Survey presented its highest honor, the William W. Mather Medal, recognizing outstanding contributions to Ohio geology, to Joseph T. Hannibal, Ph.D.

New students take field trip to NY

In July 2024, new Geosciences students Rowan, Izabelle, Avery and Owen took a week-long field trip to upstate NY with Jordan Collins, a senior majoring in Geosciences, and professor John Peck. They collected fossils, minerals, rocks, hiked to many waterfalls and wetlands.

The undergraduate Geosciences students shown below presented their research on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Celebration of Undergraduate Student Research and Creativity.

BS Geology student David Williams wins award

On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences held an Undergraduate Student Research Day. David Williams (adviser Dr. Molly Witter Shelleman) won a best student presenter award in the Natural Sciences Division.
