Supreme Court Review: Legalistic Argle Bargle

9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. This program offers a comprehensive overview of all eighty cases from the United States Supreme Court’s past term.  Justice Scalia described one of the major decisions as “argle-bargle” or nonsense, but this program tries to make sense of it all.  Faculty experts from Akron Law discuss the Court’s cases in constitutional law, criminal law, civil procedure, administrative law, business, intellectual property, and health law.  Designed in a newscast-type format, the presentations inform as they entertain.  The program is intended for all interested audiences including attorneys, journalists, high school, college and law students and the general public. Akron Law addresses issue of merit-based scholarship renewals

A recent article in the national media suggested our law school engaged in questionable practices with respect to scholarship renewals. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Here are the facts: For years (since at least 2007) we have been fully transparent about the likelihood and difficulty of maintaining our merit scholarships in all our letters to students and on our website (see https://www.uakron.edu/law/admissions/finaid/retention.dot). Widespread first-year scholarships plus relatively low tuition ($23,583 full-time tuition for 2013-14) serve our mission of keeping law school accessible and affordable. We have chosen to base continuing merit scholarships on strong performance in law school rather than on entering credentials. This strategy enables us to attract excellent students, keep law school affordable, and treat our continuing students more equitably. Our debt load upon graduation reflects this commitment: our students’ average debt is lower than 93% of all law schools and 84% of public law schools.

This Summer at Akron Law

Classes are over for the semester, but students continue to fill the halls of Akron Law. Between current students who are enrolled in summer classes and recent graduates who are preparing to take the Bar Exam, many students are just as busy now as they are during the regular semester.  Students have an opportunity to enroll in one or more of the 23 courses being offered this summer. Course offerings include Property; Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing; Basic Business Associations; Payment Systems; Secured Transactions; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Financial Accounting; Wills, Trusts and Estates; Trial Advocacy; a variety of clinical seminars; and seminars in Biodiversity/Climate; School Law; Law, Morals & Ethics; Immigration Law; and Public Health Law and Bioethics. The Ohio Bar Exam will take place July 30 – August 1, 2013. The 152 Akron Law Alumni who have registered to sit for a Bar Exam this July are immersed in bar preparatory courses, stacks of review books, and an abundance of caffeine! A team of Akron Law staff will travel to Columbus this July to provide support for the Akron Law alumni taking the Ohio Bar Exam.
